The Ford GT As a Collector’s Item – A Review of the Car’s Value and Rarity
Ford’s GT supercar is one of the fastest and most exclusive in existence; while costly, many collectors view its investment as worth it.
This 2023 Ford GT Mk IV track-focused special was inspired by the car that raced at Le Mans in 1966, featuring custom Frozen White and blue livery to reflect its heritage while its 800-horsepower engine promises unstoppable performance.
The Value
Value in the modern Ford GT isn’t difficult to find, as this car was intended as the street-legal version of its iconic GT40 predecessor which won four races at Le Mans from 1966 through 1969.
The new Ford GT has an appearance similar to its predecessor, yet is larger and taller. Camilo Pardo masterfully kept its curvaceous body while modernizing it into something truly striking.
Only 45 GT Mk II models were ever manufactured and all sold quickly for more than their $1.2 million sticker price when they hit the market in 2019. One such car, finished in Frozen White Carbon Series model is being offered up for auction through Mecum auctions; its anticipated sale should attract collectors and enthusiasts. Furthermore, this one only has 332 miles on it so should present plenty of opportunities.
The Rarity
The Ford GT is one of the world’s most highly desired cars, not only due to its impressive performance but also due to its limited production run and distinctive design. It has become an icon of American automotive greatness while pushing forward innovation and design boundaries.
The Ford GT was built over just two years, with only approximately 4,000 being produced. Today these cars remain extremely rare and often fetch premium prices at auctions such as Barrett-Jackson. It stands as testament to America’s ability to produce world-class supercars capable of competing on both racetrack and highway environments.
This auction showcases three Ford GTs, both roadgoing 2021 models and track-focused 2022 models. One is painted in custom Frozen White with blue stripes to mimic the livery of a Ford GT40 works prototype car.
The Design
When the Ford GT first hit showroom floors in 2015, its revolutionary design stunned automotive world critics and enthusiasts. Publications after publication praised it.
Todd describes this design as using “a teardrop shape, which is the most efficient aerodynamic profile.” It also utilized a concept popular in Formula 1 cars known as a keel to channel airflow in such a way that creates downforce at the front before taking it around to further reduce drag.
Interior appointments included Lightspeed Blue microsuede and Ebony Alcantara materials, accented by matte carbon fiber accents on doors, console and A-pillars; Antimatter Blue appliques on the instrument panel and seat register bezels add an Antimatter Blue touch that complements its unique wheels.
But it must be remembered that this car wasn’t built with comfort in mind, evidenced by no storage space and blind spots created by its short A-pillars. After all, its purpose was to break Ferrari’s six-year winning streak at Le Mans.
The Performance
The Ford GT is an exceptional Grand Tourer and track toy. Its wide power band, precise-yet-meaty Ricardo shifter, and intuitive steering make driving one an absolute joy at any speed or degree of aggression.
The GT stands apart from its competition due to its storied history, impressive racing pedigree, and remarkable performance. It’s a car that inspires desire and its value will never decrease over time.
Only one thing could diminish the GT’s value: receiving a worthy successor car. Yet even one that improves handling and acceleration may still be too expensive for most enthusiasts; collector cars are purchased not for their 0-60 times or lap times but because of what passion they evoke – something the GT excels at doing by drawing such strong emotional responses from its drivers as soon as it was introduced 13 years ago. Whether looking for the ultimate road legal racecar, or simply owning a piece of automotive history, owning one is something everyone should consider doing!
